NSWC Dahlgren Division Announces Second-Quarter 2022 PEO IWS Awards

By NSWCDD Corporate Communications

The Program Executive Office Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS) Excellence Awards recognized 25 individuals from Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) and Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division Dam Neck Activity (NSWCDD DNA) working on three separate teams for their exemplary accomplishments during the second quarter of fiscal 22. These teams are essential to providing our warfighters with ever-evolving equipment and capabilities to defend our nation.

NSWCDD’s Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) team performed exceptionally in evaluating the AN/SPS-73(V)18 Next Generation Surface Search Radar (NGSSR). The NGSSR replaces the Navy’s AN/SPS-73(V)12/13, Bridgemaster X-Band, AN/SPS-67 and commercial off-the-shelf radars, performing multi-function navigation and surface search, periscope detection and discrimination and emission control. The NGSSR E3 team stayed on schedule while overcoming several obstacles during 920 hours of testing. The citation recognizes James Antone, Andrey Bernov, Stephen Clement, Michael Denham, Vincent Djifo, Kevin Duong, Regina Eller, Aaron Krause, Eric Leasure, Chipper Macalintal, Justin Mason, Russel Mersiowsky, Kevin Riley, Michael Thurmond and Allen Zahneigh.

When the AN/SPQ-15(V) Data Distribution System required critical changes to allow it to interface with the ANS/SPY-1 Multi-Mission Signal Processor, the NSWCDD DNA Code R32 team went to work. The team’s ANS/SPY-1 Multi-Mission Signal Processor Refresh significantly redesigned the software architecture, enhancing the system’s capabilities while reducing hardware requirements by upgrading from a hardwired connection to a network-based one. The entire process would have taken between nine months to a year under normal circumstances, but the team completed the upgrade in less than 60 days. Congratulations on a job well done to Mary Armbruster, Ruperto Asiatico, Kimberly Carter, Dennis Catahan, Lisa Dixon, Bathsheba Farrow, Rachel Showers, Anthony Stinnette and Lakisha Treasure.

The AN/SQQ-89(V) Surface Ship Undersea Warfare (USW) Combat System is dependent on stave cables that supply connection to the AN/SQS-53 hull array acoustic transducers. These cables have a limited-service life due to material limitations and environmental exposure. Stave cable failure degrades sonar performance impacting AN/SQQ-89 Operational Ability and USW mission capability. Stave cables are a long-lead material necessitating an early commitment of funds to ensure an adequate supply is always on hand. When the IWS5 AN/SQQ-89(V) Stave Cable In-Service Engineering Agent (ISEA) team, including NSWCDD DNA’s Dustin Hoover, recognized the impact of a funding shortfall beginning in FY22, they immediately went to work to maintain the Navy’s stock of stave cables and plan for future needs. The team’s mission required quick planning, execution and constant monitoring to sure the necessary funds. Since the anticipated shortfall is expected to continue indefinitely, the team worked with a network of stakeholders to transition oversight of the stave cable supply to the Naval Supply Systems Command. The citation declares that “the team demonstrated unparalleled excellence in leadership and teamwork through this effort.”

Please join NSWCDD Command and senior leadership in congratulating each team member for supporting our Navy warfighters and ensuring a robust national defense.
