Crane, Ind. – Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) and Indiana University’s Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR) have re-signed a cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) on Sept. 13 in a signing event held at Indiana University (IU). The goal is to strive for state of the art technology advancements and grow the collaboration to improve capabilities in the areas of software assurance and trusted artificial intelligence. This CRADA is a follow-on collaboration between NSWC Crane and CACR, which was originally executed two years ago.
“CACR is proud to partner with Crane as we advance cybersecurity in the state of Indiana,” said Von Welch, director, IU Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research. “This new CRADA represents a collaboration to advance CACR and Crane’s expertise in software assurance and trusted artificial intelligence. These are critical areas for our respective institutions as well as Indiana.”
NSWC Crane and CACR recognized mutual interests in cybersecurity efforts in 2015 and began discussions around the identification of aligned technology goals and future collaborations. The 2016 CRADA was responsible for what is now the PACT (Principles-based Assessment Cybersecurity Toolkit) project which has led to multiple publications, a Navy Technical R&D project, IU participation in Crane’s Temporary Faculty Program, and most recently a Congressionally-supported project overseen by Office of the Secretary of Defense that will execute in FY19 and FY20.
“The partnership between both parties is a natural fit considering IU and NSWC Crane are leaders in the cyber domain and have demonstrated great recent success in working together,” said Dr. Rob Templeman, Distinguished Engineer for Cybersecurity at NSWC Crane. “This coupled with the close geographical location makes this partnership a natural fit.”
CACR is notable for their advancement of multidisciplinary applied cybersecurity research and engagement in many business verticals to include critical infrastructure, healthcare, finance, education.
By leveraging NSWC Crane’s Technology Transfer (T2) program, the two organizations have seen exponential growth in the partnership that include collaborations in various technical areas. Throughout 2018 there have been 17 active T2 agreements between the Indiana University and NSWC Crane that are instrumental in driving innovation within the region.
