CRANE, Ind. -- A team of information technologists at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) received the nationally-recognized Future Trends award for innovative accomplishments in cloud computing at the Government Information Technology Executive Council (GITEC) summit in Annapolis, Maryland.

NSWC Crane’s Innovation Network team, which operated under project name “Cumulus,” was selected for their ground breaking solution to virtualize traditionally isolated operating systems while implementing micro-segmentation for network security. By securely connecting previously isolated assets to the cloud, this solution provides warfighters with updated information, increasing their safety and capabilities.

“The Cumulus project allowed us to design, engineer, and implement a pilot capability that allowed historically unapproved IT systems to connect the network and Internet,” said Francis Ross, Command Information System Security Manager (ISSM).  “This new capability has led to greater efficiency and increased our ability to continue our support of the RDT&E mission now and in the future.”

The team included Bill Carter, Brandon Callison, Brenda Leighty, Corey Bergsrud, Dan Ireland, Francis Ross, John Vaupel, Norris Reynolds, Ric Litts, Rob Walker, Ryan Johnson, Sean O’Brien, Tim Bliven, and Jim Parsch supervised.

Due to the success of Cumulus, a larger group is forming to continue enhancing the cloud environment while also phasing in Microsoft Azure support. The goal is to make it usable by the entire Warfare Center enterprise.

"On behalf of NSWC Crane, I would like to congratulate our information technologists on the national recognition they have received,” said Dr. Angie Lewis, Corporate Operations Department Director and Business Director for NSWC Crane, “I would also like to thank Team Cumulus for their dedication to support the warfighter.  It is a pleasure to be associated with such a high performing and well-respected team of professionals.  They each represent the dedication and innovation so often associated with the Crane workforce.”

NSWC Crane is a naval laboratory and a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) with mission areas in Expeditionary Warfare, Strategic Missions and Electronic Warfare. NSWC Crane is responsible for multi-domain, multi- spectral, full life cycle support of technologies and systems enhancing capability to today’s warfighter.
