PSNS & IMF to conduct oil spill training exercise

By PSNS & IMF Public Affairs

BREMERTON, Wash. -- Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility will practice its ability to protect the Sinclair Inlet environment during an oil spill response training exercise on Thursday, July 12.

During the exercise, PSNS & IMF personnel will deploy oil spill response equipment near the west end of the shipyard and in Sinclair Inlet between the shipyard and Port Orchard. The exercise will not interfere with any ferry operations.

PSNS & IMF conducts periodic exercises in order to train on and assess the operational readiness of the Facility Response Team and spill response equipment, in addition to the effectiveness of the Geographic Response Plans—booming strategies developed to protect environmentally sensitive areas.Exercise activities may be visible to the public, including oil spill response boats performing tactical oil recovery methods. Floating fabric oil-absorbing pads will be placed on the water to indicate the area of a simulated oil spill and will be removed at the conclusion of the exercise. However, no simulated oil or other liquid will be discharged into the water, and there will be no effects on the marine environment.
