iNFUSION enables the HVL environment

NAVSEA’s warfare centers have been leveraging the iNFUSION platform as a central place to connect, collaborate and share solutions in a secure, CAC-enabled environment/setting. This suite of online tools, hosted and maintained by SPAWAR, was originally developed by computer scientist Tom Schlosser and funded as a NAVSEA warfare center initiative in fall 2016.

The platform has really taken off as a social intranet space which supports the Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson’s vision for innovation and accelerated learning across the Navy.

As of June 30, the platform has over 12,800 registered users, primarily hailing from NAVSEA warfare centers, but also including users from NAVSEA HQ, the four naval shipyards and the regional maintenance centers.

The platform’s tools leverage familiar social media concepts to facilitate adoption and engagement. For example, Fusion, similar to Facebook, is a place for employees to connect, share updates, and follow relevant hashtags of interest. Chat works like instant messaging for less formal dialogue and file sharing. NAVSEA Wiki is a tool modeled after Wikipedia for communities of practice to collaborate on document libraries, crowdsource information and share solutions. Blogs are a place to share individual wisdom and insight. Switchboard serves as a home page and initial entry point to the other iNFUSION tools. Developers are currently working towards a Google-like search engine that will enable easy access to information as well as track trending content posted across the platform.

The warfare centers have set up a specific Wiki page tied to Vice Adm. Moore’s Campaign Plan to Expand the Advantage to capture inputs and examples from across the enterprise of how the workforce is supporting the campaign goals and lines of effort:

·       On-time delivery of ships and submarines
·       Culture of Affordability
·       Cybersecurity
·       High Velocity Learning
·       Talented People

In many ways, this page serves as a high velocity tool that empowers field activities to share best practices and solutions through articles, blogs and videos to benefit the larger organization. This page also increases visibility of the collective efforts across NAVSEA to execute on the campaign plan’s goals and lines of effort.

The iNFUSION platform exemplifies high velocity learning in action by reducing barriers to information sharing and collaboration across NAVSEA’s vast footprint.

“These tools are easy to use and interactive, which encourages sharing information within and across organizations,” said Donald McCormack, Executive Director of Naval Surface and Undersea Warfare Centers. “There have already been numerous cases where people have posed technical questions or problems and received immediate responses that helped address or solve their issues.”

If you haven’t signed up for an account, registration is easy, provided you are on an NMCI or RDT&E network: https://fusion.navsea.navy.mil/

The iNFUSION developers are currently investigating how those in supervisory of shipbuilding locations can obtain access to iNFUSION. Stay tuned.
