PEARL HARBOR, Hickam - Michael Crabbe-Jones, wood/shipwrights specialist with Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) finalizes the keel blocks in preparation for the docking of a Virginia-class fast-attack submarine at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, July 7, 2026. Shipwrights play a critical role in docking and undocking operations, configuring more than a hundred massive keel blocks, side blocks, and roll-off blocks within fractions of an inch to match the unique underwater hull shape of each vessel. PHNSY & IMF’s mission is to keep the Navy’s fleet “Fit to Fight" by repairing, maintaining, and modernizing the Navy's fast-attack submarines and surface ships. Strategically located in the heart of the Pacific, it is the most comprehensive fleet repair and maintenance facility between the U.S. West Coast and the Far East.
