PEARL HARBOR, Hickam - Russel Chinaka, painter helper, with Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF), performs a high-pressure basin washdown of Dry Dock 2 immediately following dry dock dewatering at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, July 7, 2026. The basin washdown is a critical maintenance step performed immediately after a vessel is undocked and the water is pumped out, clearing away marine growth, silt, and debris from the dock floor. This ensures a clean and safe working environment for the shipyard's shipwright, rigging, and engineering teams as they work quickly under tight schedules to build the next docking pattern. PHNSY & IMF’s mission is to keep the Navy’s fleet “Fit to Fight" by repairing, maintaining, and modernizing the Navy's fast-attack submarines and surface ships. Strategically located in the heart of the Pacific, it is the most comprehensive fleet repair and maintenance facility between the U.S. West Coast and the Far East.
