Ryan Franke (right), a technician in Carderock’s Subtractive and Additive Manufacturing Branch, explains to Steve Ouimette, Carderock’s Deputy Technical Director, what Benchy the Tug Boat is and what it is used for, during the grand opening of Carderock’s new Advanced Manufacturing Prototyping (AMP) Lab. Benchy, or Benchmark, is the 3D printed part that Franke is holding. Benchy is a quick, little test part that was created to test the limits of a 3D printer. It was designed with a few features that are known to be difficult obstacles for 3D printers. Here, Franke explains that Benchy is used in the AMP Lab training class to allow new users the opportunity to get in the Driver’s Seat and learn start to finish how to create a Build Platform for the Printers, and how to get that platform from the computer to the printer itself and how to get the print started.
