Bethesda, MD - From left: Shelby Quiring, Juyeong Oh, Allysia Lam and Katherine Westerlund make minor fixes to Skookumchuck, the submarine for University of British Columbia’s submarine team, on June 25, 2019. UBC returned to Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division this week to compete in the 15th International Human-Powered Submarine Races, taking place in its 3,200-foot David Taylor Model Basin in West Bethesda, Md. This biennial science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) event provides an avenue for high school and college teams to tackle the difficult challenges of submarine design, construction and operation.
