NUWC Division Newport’s 70th anniversary of explosion demonstrates the importance of honoring Memorial Day
On the morning of April 26, 1955, five civilian workers at the Naval Underwater Ordnance Station, a precursor organization of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport Division Newport, were killed in an explosion during a test event in a dynamometer test room. The blast is believed to have resulted from a high-pressure line rupture while testing a high-energy monopropellant fuel in a modified Mark 16 Mod 3 torpedo. This year marks the 70th anniversary of that incident and the deaths and highlights the importance of recognizing Memorial Day.

Dr. Phil Budden, a senior lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Sloan School of Management, presents “MIT’s Approach to Innovation” to the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport workforce on May 7, 2025, as part of a monthlong focus on innovation.
