STEM Opportunities

NREIP

The Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP) is a ten-week summer internship program designed to provide undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to participate in guided research at a Department of Navy (DON) laboratory.

 

The goals of NREIP are to encourage students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and research participation, and to make students aware of research and development careers available with the DON.

 

NREIP provides competitive research internships to approximately 800 college students each year.  Participating students spend ten weeks during the summer conducting research at one of 44 DON laboratories.  Participants will be selected based upon academic achievement, personal statements, recommendations, and their career and research interests.

 

Qualifying Requirements

 

Must be:

 

  • A U.S. Citizen
  • A college Sophomore, Juniors, Senior, or Graduate student

 

Program Highlights

 

  • 10-week summer program
  • New undergraduate student participants receive $7,500
  • Returning undergraduate students receive $9,000 (must have completed a full 10-week program in a prior year)
  • Graduate students receive $11,500 (must currently be in graduate school and taking graduate school courses)

SMART

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.  Selected students receive a full academic scholarship and the opportunity to continue their research as civilian employees at a DoD laboratory after graduation.

 

SMART Scholars are among the most talented and innovative minds in STEM with a mission to support the United States and protect national security.  SMART scholars have the opportunity to be leading agents in their field and pursue their passions. Qualifying Requirements

Must be:

  • A U.S. citizen at time of application
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Willing to accept post-graduate employment with the DoD
  • A student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the disciplines listed on the SMART website

Program Highlights

  • Full tuition and education-related fees (does not include items such as meal plans, housing, or parking)
  • Stipend paid at a rate of $30,000 - $46,000 depending on degree pursuing (may be prorated depending on award length)
  • Paid summer internships
  • Health Insurance allowance up to $2,500 per calendar year
  • Miscellaneous Supplies Allowance of $1,000 per academic year
  • Mentoring
  • Employment placement after graduation

SSEP

 

Program Overview

 

The STEM Student Employment Program (SSEP) provides direct hire authority for undergraduate and graduate students seeking a degree in scientific, technical, engineering, and mathematics majors. Opportunities vary but are primarily in the following disciplines: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, computer engineering, aerospace engineering, industrial engineering, chemical engineering, computer science, material science and engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics, biology, and chemistry.  The program provides interns with exposure to public service, enhances their educational experience, and may provide financial aid to support educational goals.

  • Paid internship
  • May be eligible for benefits (annual and sick leave, TSP, health and life insurance)
  • May be eligible for tuition assistance
  • Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent job in the competitive service
  • Opportunity to gain meaningful work experience related to their academic field of study

 

Eligibility Requirements:

 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • Must be taking at least a half-time academic course load as defined by the college you

  • Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • Must be enrolled and pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate degree
  • Engineering majors must be enrolled at a college or university accredited by the

Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)

  • Must be able to meet a 640-hour (16 week) work requirement prior to graduation
  • Must remain in a STEM course of study for the duration of the program
  • For students seeking an associate’s degree, academic criteria must be transferable to a four-year college or university, and student must intend to complete the associate’s degree to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a bachelor’s degree

 

 

 

Work Schedules:

 

  • Students are required to be in a work status during each summer break from school until graduation, unless pre-approved for an exception
  • Students have the option to work during official breaks from school and scheduled work rotations outside of summer breaks
  • Each work experience must be consistent with the student’s academic studies or career goals and designed to meet the minimum work requirement of 640 hours (16 weeks)
  • It is NSWCIHD policy that work schedules will not interfere with academic coursework
  • Work schedules may be full-time or part-time at the discretion of the supervisor

PAACTSEP

Program Overview

 

The Professional, Administrative, Assistant, Clerical and Technician Student Employment Program (PAACTSEP) provides direct hire authority for students to gain practical job skills while working with, or understanding the guidance of, experienced personnel through alternating or parallel periods of academic study and career-oriented employment. These positions focus on Business, Human Resources, Contracting, IT, Logistics, Technicians and Finance support for NSWC IHD.

  • May be eligible for tuition assistance
