Program Background
The widespread use of lasers in both commercial and military applications increases the probability of exposure to personal injury from laser radiation. It is the U.S. Department of the Navy (DoN) policy to identify and control laser radiation hazards as a matter of military necessity. The mission of the DoN Laser Hazards Control Program is to facilitate that requirement in an effective and timely manner.

Welcome to the Navy/Marine Corps Laser Safety website. It is our intention to promote safe use of lasers and to provide information to both Navy, Marine, and contractor personnel that will help expedite the safe, timely, and cost-effective acquisition and deployment of laser technologies into the fleet.

The publishing of the OPNAVINST 5100.27C/MCO 5104.1D on the June 25, 2025, institutes the transition of the Laser Safety Training Program curriculum’s execution to the Naval Safety and Environmental Training Center – Naval Schoolhouse. Per the guidance of the Technical Lead Agent for Laser Safety (TLA); during the timeframe that the Naval Schoolhouse is preparing for the instruction of the Basic Laser Safety Officer Course, which combines the previous curriculums of the Technical Laser Safety Officer (TLSO) Course and the Administrative Laser Safety Officer (ALSO) Course, the TLSO and ALSO courses will continue to be offered.

Certified ALSO and TLSO Instructors are permitted to continue providing instruction and certifications received under this direction will be honored. The TLSO Course dates are listed through the Laser Safety Course Training Schedule below.
