Quality considerations of optoelectronic devices and associated optics (fibers, cables, connectors etc.) are consistent with those as defined by the military specifications identified. Discrete semiconductor qualification procedures, screening tests, and conformance considerations of MIL-PRF-19500 may be used as a guideline when defining LEDs, phototransistors, photodiodes, and optocouplers.   Since “quality” is the conformance of a product to a specific set of attributes and design criteria cited by a manufacturer or by a customer specification, it is crucial that the choice for military and other critical applications be a product of a quality, consistent with the requirements of intended application. The use of commercial grade product in these applications is limited as the life cycle and reliability level may be below what is required.
