Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard wraps up dry dock phase of North Carolina Maintenance

The Virginia-class fast-attack submarine USS North Carolina (SSN 777) transits the waters of Pearl Harbor to the piers following a successful undocking evolution at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Aug. 12, 2026. The submarine shifted to a pier-side location to continue its operational preparations after completing dry dock maintenance.

North Carolina was commissioned May 3, 2008. North Carolina is the fourth Virginia-class submarine and the fourth U.S. Navy ship to be named for the Tar Heel state. North Carolina is assigned to Submarine Squadron 1 and capable of supporting various missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, strike warfare, special operations support, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

Aug. 12, 2026 - It was a hot, bustling day at the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum at Pearl Harbor. A recent ribbon-cutting for a new exhibit highlighted Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard's more than 100-year history of submarine contributions. This provided the perfect backdrop for Honolulu Community College’s summer Career and Technical Education (CTE) program to cap off its season with a shipyard-sponsored mini-trades fair.

The Impossible Turnaround of Dry Dock 2 at PHNSY

The operation involved undocking a U.S. Navy submarine and immediately preparing the dock structure to receive a second vessel. This expedited schedule required precise coordination across multiple industrial departments to meet strict fleet readiness timelines.

USS Colorado returns to Fleet from maintenance ahead of schedule, accelerating Pacific readiness

Virginia-class fast-attack submarine USS Colorado (SSN 788) returns from sea trials during a maintenance period at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, June 6, 2026. Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) and Colorado’s crew completed the scheduled maintenance period on June 10, 2026, 29 days ahead of schedule, returning to the fleet lethal and ready to defend the nation.
