Ship Wartime Repair and Maintenance Exercise (SWARM EX) in Japan

As a strategic move to enhance fleet readiness, exercises to provide experience to government Forward Deployed Ship Repair Teams (FDSRT) in battle damage assessment and repair while also developing partnerships with the local ship repair industries to assure maintenance and repair resiliency, Ship Wartime Repair and Maintenance Exercises (SWARMEX) are being conducted in the SEVENTH Fleet Area of Responsibility (AOR).  SRF stood up a project team for the oversight and participation in the first SWARMEX conducted within the facilities of Japan.

The exercise faced an immediate and significant challenge due to the difficulties mooring at the Japan Maritime United (JMU) Maizuru Yard pier.  In a remarkable demonstration of readiness and cooperation from our host-nation partner Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), the ship and maintenance was swiftly relocated to the neighboring JMSDF Maizuru facility.  The strong collaboration and unwavering determination from JMU, JMSDF, and SRF-JRMC combined overcame the barriers to execute the maintenance on the USS FITZGERALD (DDG 62).  The exercise provided a critical opportunity to test and validate our joint capabilities in a dynamic and challenging environment.

As we conduct more SWARMEX events within Japan, the insights gained from this Maizuru event will be instrumental in shaping the planning and execution for our future exercises.  The ongoing series of exercises will lead to readiness, prepared to respond to any contingency, and ability to operate as a cohesive and effective joint force.

The success of this exercise is a direct reflection of the professionalism and dedication of everyone. It has also reinforced the bonds with our alliances and provided a path forward to our continued cooperation as we build on this success for future exercises while working together to ensure a safe and secure future.

SRF-JRMC expresses its highest gratitude to the project team who made this happen, and to our indispensable partners at JMSDF and JMU.  Their shared commitment turned a potential setback into a resounding success.  This effort proves that together, we can overcome any obstacle. It is the spirit of our slogan:  Nandemo Dekimasu!
