SRF-JRMC and JMSDF Deepen Alliance with Historic Docking Exercise

This historic exercise is a direct execution of SRF-JRMC's 2024 Strategic Plan, which emphasizes enhancing interoperability and deepening the alliance with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Answering critical questions about the command’s ability to safely dock, execute a full-scale maintenance availability, and support a JMSDF vessel during an emergent scenario, SRF-JRMC is pioneering a new, more integrated model of fleet support. This effort not only strengthens the U.S.-Japan alliance at a foundational level but also builds mutual trust and procedural understanding, ultimately contributing to the shared maritime security of the region.

This strategic vision was put into action during a joint exercise in Mid-November, which involved a JMSDF destroyer and SRF-JRMC's Dry Dock 5. The project team showed extreme effort and dedication, successfully planning and scheduling the entire docking evolution for a first-time vessel. This complex process was managed in close collaboration with their JMSDF counterparts.

More importantly, the exercise proved to be a powerful demonstration of the tight relationship and future prospects between the U.S. Navy and the JMSDF. The willingness to undertake such a challenging "first" and work through its complexities side-by-side has paved the way for even greater collaboration. The project team identified various lessons learned from the evolution that will be used as a base for the next joint docking project. With this collaboration, SRF-JRMC and the JMSDF took a major step towards a significant milestone, and a special show of gratitude is extended to the dedicated team whose planning and hard work supported this important initiative.
