PORT HUENEME, Calif. - A sounding rocket towers over a launch site on Wake Island in the Pacific Ocean ahead of the Feb. 12 Space Measurement of a Rocket-released Turbulence (SMART) mission, which the Naval Research Laboratory managed. Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division’s White Sands Detachment launched the rocket — its first ever with four stages — which soared into low Earth orbit and deployed an experiment to test plasma conversion in space.
