KING GEORGE, Va. (June 28, 2017) - Kerrie Pierce, a King George Middle School life science teacher, reviews the number of each M&M color her students predict will be found in a large bag after compiling statistics on the numbers in smaller bags. The middle school students used M&Ms to learn about statistics and measurement at the 2017 Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD)-sponsored Navy science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) Summer Academy, held June 26-30. Camp activities also included ten robotic challenges; building a water rocket and determining the optimal fuel loading to maximize height; exploring epidemiology; building and destructively testing a tower from balsa wood with the goal of maximizing the strength to weight ratio; and building a boat out of foil and straws with the aim of maximizing its cargo carrying capacity.
