The Virginia-class fast-attack submarine USS North Carolina (SSN 777) transits the waters of Pearl Harbor to the piers following a successful undocking evolution at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY & IMF) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Aug. 12, 2026. The submarine shifted to a pier-side location to continue its operational preparations after completing dry dock maintenance. 

North Carolina was commissioned May 3, 2008. North Carolina is the fourth Virginia-class submarine and the fourth U.S. Navy ship to be named for the Tar Heel state. North Carolina is assigned to Submarine Squadron 1 and capable of supporting various missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, strike warfare, special operations support, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division (NSWC IHD) conducted the first-ever static firing of a fully loaded, re-grained Mk 70 solid rocket motor (SRM) at the command’s manufacturing facilities in Indian Head, Md., August 5. The demonstration is a significant step toward increasing the command’s production capacity of large SRMs for national defense programs. The command’s Mk 70 Production Using Salvaged Hardware program reuses components from Mk 12 Terrier boosters to produce certified Mk 70 boosters for fleet readiness and training requirements.
