USS Missouri (SSN-780) Undocks from Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard & IMF

By Lt. Jordan Fouquette, Deputy Nuclear Assistant Project Superintendent

PEARL HARBOR NAVAL SHIPYARD & INTERMEDIATE MAINTENANCE FACILITY, Hawaii - Two weeks after Dry Dock #1 celebrated its centennial, USS Missouri (SSN-780) successfully undocked from the dry dock on Sept. 4, 2019. The undocking was a collaborative effort among the project team, ship’s force, and shipyard docking team in order to execute a safe and timely evolution.

“The whole docking team really came together to perform a smooth and successful undocking,” said Code 300.24 Command Dock Master Joseph Medeiros. “These evolutions are very complex and high-risk, and every shop and code involved executed their portions very efficiently and effectively.”

This event marked a major milestone in the USS Missouri’s Extended Dry docking Selected Restricted Availability (EDSRA) as it prepares to enter the final stretch of its availability while pier side at Bravo Pier #2.

“I am proud of the opportunity to lead this team. The ability of the crew and the project team working together to resolve problems and clear barriers resulted in the ability to undock and keep the energy high,” said Chad Nishida, Code 300 USS Missouri Project Superintendent. “Now we need to focus our attention on the end game.”

The USS Missouri is the Navy’s seventh Virginia Class (VACL) submarine and was commissioned on July 31, 2010 in Groton, Conn. USS Missouri and her crew conducted a homeport change in January 2018 becoming one of six VACL submarines homeported at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam when assigned to Submarine Squadron 1. Following her EDSRA here at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, USS Missouri will support and execute the Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet mission.
