NEWPORT, RI –
The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division, Newport, R.I., will sponsor a mathematics competition dubbed “The Mathcathalon” among middle schools in New Bedford, Mass. on Wednesday, March 18, 2015. The event will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Roosevelt Middle School, 119 Frederick St, and will include teams from Normandin, Roosevelt, and Keith middle schools.
The Mathcathalon is an event designed to hone the competitive skills of students involved in the schools’ MATHCOUNTS programs, a math competition program of fun and creative problem solving challenges. MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement and provides the extra incentive for students to push themselves to achieve more in mathematics.
The Mathcathalon will feature challenges for both school teams and individual team members. Among the events in the competition are high speed problem solving; math dice, Rubik’s Cube and tangram competitions; and a Jeopardy-styled event that tests a team’s speed and knowledge.
NUWC Division Newport sponsors these events in addition to its support to after school science clubs, robotics teams, and other programs to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among students from elementary through high school ages. The Division has been involved with the New Bedford schools since 2009.
NUWC Division Newport is one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. NUWC Division Newport’s mission is to provide research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures. NUWC’s other division is located in Keyport, Wash.
