NSWC Crane Pathways Intern Named 2018 Association of Old Crows Scholarship Recipient

By NSWC Crane Corporate Communications

Crane, Ind. - Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) Pathways Intern Ryan Loehrlein was selected by The Association of Old Crows (AOC) Educational Foundation (AEF) to receive a $12,500 scholarship to continue his education in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) field.

Loehrlein is spending his third summer in a row at NSWC Crane as he pursues his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Finance at the University of Southern Indiana (USI).

“This single scholarship allows me to finish my Bachelor of Science degrees in Finance and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Southern Indiana,” he said. “It allows me to focus on achieving my educational and career goals while I am a student at USI.”

Loehrlein said winning has been surreal and a great honor. He first learned of the scholarship through NSWC Crane, and his experiences with electronic warfare led him to the AOC. He said he never would have found this opportunity without his internships through the Department of the Navy Pathways Student Trainee Program.

To earn the scholarship, the AOC requires students to write why they want to dedicate their careers to national defense. Loehrlein said he referenced a quote from GK Chesterton – “I realized that a true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.”

Loehrlein wrote in his essay, “This single truth inspired me to pursue a career in national defense, so I can protect our warfighters alongside the country I live in.”

NSWC Crane is a naval laboratory and a field activity of NAVSEA with focus areas in Expeditionary Warfare, Strategic Missions and Electronic Warfare. NSWC Crane is responsible for multi-domain, multi- spectral, full life cycle support of technologies and systems enhancing capability to today’s warfighter.
