NSWC Crane Hosts Black History Month Luncheon

By NSWC Crane Corporate Communications | Feb. 7, 2018

CRANE, Ind. – On Wednesday, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) – in conjunction with the Crane Chapter of Blacks In Government (BIG) and the Hoosier Hills Chapter of Federally Employed Women (FEW) – hosted a luncheon and panel discussion to celebrate Black History Month.

The panel consisted of two Senior Executive Service (SES) members: Donjette Gilmore, Acting Auditor General for the Department of the Navy; and Special Agent Mark Russ, Executive Assistant Directory, National Security Directorate of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS).

The decorated panel of experts spoke to the theme: ‘Moving from Dream, to Reality, To Sustainment … How do you Interpret the Dream? How have you Realized the Dream? How do we Sustain the Dream for the Future?’ The ‘Dream’ refers to the one Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. explained during his famous ‘I Have A Dream’ speech in 1963.

“Every single action that we take with other people matters. Everybody that we’re able to help matters. That’s part of how I’ve realized the Dream,” said Special Agent Russ. “Your dream isn’t going to be the same as any other person, and it should not be a contest to see who can make the most money, who can get the highest grade, or who can get the best projects. It should literally boil down to what makes you happy. Every day when I get in my car to drive to work, I am happy. That’s the Dream every single day for me.”

Added Gilmore: “Sustaining the Dream is about legacy. It’s about pouring all of yourself into other people. It’s about nurturing and caring for one another.”

Black History Month has been celebrated in the United States each February since 1976, and it offers a great way to recognize the important contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout the history of the nation.
