Commander William J. Sumsion

Officer In Charge, Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center, Detachment Bahrain

Commander William Sumsion is from Washington State and joined the Navy while attending Eastern Washington University in 2001. After his commissioning and being selected for the Nuclear Instructor program, his first assignment was to teach at the Navy Nuclear Power Training Command. Toward the end of his first tour, he was selected to become an Engineering Duty Officer (EDO). CDR Sumsion then went to Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey where he obtained a Master’s of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Following his graduate work, CDR Sumsion completed the Engineering Diving Officer and Salvage Diving courses at the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Command proudly qualifying as a Diving Officer for the Navy. He subsequently earned his EDO Submarine Dolphins as part of his sea time on the USS Louisiana and at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS). Also while at PSNS, Sumsion was the Ship Safety Officer for the USS Michigan and various other submarines. At the end of his PSNS tour, CDR Sumsion deployed for 13 months to Afghanistan and worked in the Joint Engineering directorate as part of the 3-star operational command staff in Kabul performing a variety of missions for the US Army as an Individual Augmentee.

Upon returning from Kabul, CDR Sumsion went to Singapore as the Diving and Salvage Officer for 7th Fleet with responsibility for both diving and maintenance for all ships deployed to that area primarily working on the Littoral Class Ship (LCS). With his experience in the Pacific, he was then selected to go to Japan at the Ship Repair Facility in Yokosuka as the Engineering Department Head (Code 200). His tour in Yokosuka concluded with Sumsion leading the sailor recovery and subsequent ship salvage of the USS Fitzgerald.

After Japan, CDR Sumsion returned back to the U.S. at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) in Kittery, ME. His assignments at PNSY included Deputy Project Superintendent for the USS New Mexico, Assistant Operations Officer, and as the Operations Officer (Code 300). Then CDR Sumsion worked at US Fleet Forces Command in Norfolk, VA as the Submarine Branch Head.

Currently, CDR Sumsion is the Officer in Charge at Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center, Detachment Bahrain.
