Commander Robert D. Lane Jr., USN

Executive Officer, Nuclear Power Training Unit, Charleston S.C.

Commander Robert D. Lane Jr. enlisted in the Navy in April 1992 under the Naval Nuclear Power Program.

 

After attending Electrician’s Mate “A” school and Naval Nuclear Power Training Command (NNPTC) in Orlando, Florida, and Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU) in Charleston, South Carolina, he reported to Daniel Webster (MTS 626) as a Junior Staff Instructor in June 1994. 

 

Lane reported in July 1996 to USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) in Bremerton, Washington. He served as the Reactor Electrical Training Assistant and #1 Reactor Room Work Center Supervisor while the ship completed one and a half Western Pacific deployments. During his tour he was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program in 1999.

 

In July 1999, he reported to the Naval ROTC unit at Rice University, where he advanced to chief petty officer, attended the University of Houston, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Technology, and commissioned as a Naval Officer in December 2001. He returned to Charleston, South Carolina, to complete NNPTC and NPTU as an ensign.

 

Lane reported in May 2003 to USS Jefferson City (SSN 759) in Bremerton, Washington. He served as Chemical and Radiological Controls Assistant, Quality Assurance Officer, Assistant Weapons Officer, and Assistant Engineer while completing a Depot Maintenance Period, one Western Pacific deployment.   

 

In June 2006 he reported to NPTU Charleston, on the Sam Rayburn (MTS 635) as a Shift Engineer. While at NPTU he was selected as the MTS 635 Material Officer where he completed three maintenance shutdowns and planned a Pierside Extended Maintenance Availability.

 

Lane reported in December 2009 as Engineer Officer to USS Maryland (GOLD) (SSBN 738) in Kings Bay, Georgia. The ship completed four strategic deterrent patrols.

 

In August 2012 he reported to Chief of Naval Operations Undersea Warfare Division where he served as the Submarine Maintenance and Operations Requirements Officer for two budget cycles.


Lane reported in September 2014 as Executive Officer to USS La Jolla (SSN 701) in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  While aboard La Jolla the ship conducted a fleet transfer to Norfolk, Virginia for the first Los Angeles-class Engineered Overhaul and Moored Training Ship Conversion.

 

In September 2016 Lane reported to NPTU Charleston as the executive officer.

 

Lane’s personal awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards), and multiple campaign and unit awards.
