Capt. Derrick Blackston assumed the duties of Chief of Staff for Naval Sea Systems Command in August 2019. He was recently awarded a Masters of Science degree in National Strategic Resource Management from the National Defense University in Washington DC. Prior to this assignment he successfully completed his post O5 HR Milestone tour, serving as the Executive Assistant for the Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education (OPNAV N1B).
Blackstonis a 1997 graduate of Creighton University, receiving his commission as an 1110 Surface Warfare Officer through Officer Candidate School. He is a 2007 graduate from the Naval Postgraduate School (Master of Science in Manpower Systems Analysis) and he earned his Master of Business Administration in Accounting and Finance from Regis University in Denver, Colorado.
Blackston served aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68) as the Radar and Air Traffic Control Officer and USS Rushmore (LSD 47) where he was assigned as the Repairs Division and Assistant Damage Control Officer. He later served as Rushmore’s Auxiliaries and Electrical Officer before being transferred to Navy Recruiting District (NRD) San Diego for his department head shore assignment. He was designated as a Navy Human Resource Officer in 2004. His Human Resource tours include Operations Officer at NRD San Diego; Section Head, Special and Incentive Pays Program Manager in the Navy Plans and Policies Division (N13), Chief of Naval Operations Staff; Deputy Chief Strategist (N1Z) for the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (N1), Officer in Charge, United States National Support Element Madrid, Spain and MPTE Section Head for the Force Generation Branch of the Chief of Naval Operations Staff, Assessments Division (N81). His HR competencies are Recruiting, Requirements and Management.
Blackston’s awards and decorations include three Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various other unit, service and personal awards. He is certified by the Human Resources Certification Institute as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and has proven subspecialties in Operational Research Analysis (3211S) and Manpower Systems Analysis (3130Q).
