Command Master Chief Scott A. Payfer

Command Master Chief, Trident Refit Facility

Master Chief Scott A. Payfer was born in San Diego, California, and grew up in Groton, Connecticut.


Payfer joined the Navy in September 1996. He graduated from Trident Radio Operator “A” School in February 1997 and reported to his first ship, USS Michigan (SSBN 727 Gold) in April 1997 where he qualified in submarines.


His sea tours include USS Nebraska (SSBN 739 Gold), USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735 Gold), USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23), and finally USS Henry M. Jackson (Blue), where he served as Chief of the Boat from August 2013 to April 2017.


His shore tours include Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific in Bangor, Washington, Trident Training Facility in Bangor, and Trident Refit Facility in Bangor, where he is serving as the interim Command Master Chief.


Payfer’s awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards) and various unit and campaign awards.
