Commander Mark Schuchmann, a native of Pocahontas, Illinois, enlisted in the Navy in1996, as a nuclear Machinist’s Mate. He was subsequently selected for the Nuclear Enlisted Commissioning Program and was commissioned in 2000.
His education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Idaho; a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering including completion of the Total Ship Systems Engineering (TSSE) program from the Naval Postgraduate School; and a Master of Engineering Management degree from Old Dominion University. Additionally, he holds a Professional Engineers License in Mechanical Engineering from the state of California.
Commander Schuchmann served aboard USS Pasadena (SSN 752) from 2002 to 2005. While aboard, he deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and qualified as a Submarine Warfare Officer. On Pasadena he held several positions including Main Propulsion Assistant, Assistant Weapons Officer, Quality Assurance Officer, and he also qualified as an Engineer Officer.
He next reported to Jacksonville University’s (JU) Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps as a Naval Science Instructor. During his time at JU, he was selected for lateral transfer into the Engineering Duty Officer community. Commander Schuchmann completed his Engineering Duty Officer qualification at Ship Repair Facility Yokosuka, Japan, from 2009 to 2012. While there, he was Ship Superintendent for USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) and USS Stethem (DDG 63) as well as the Command Docking Officer. Following the completion of the Stethem Fiscal Year 2011 SRA, he transitioned to the position of Deputy Business and Strategic Planning Officer.
From 2012 to 2015, Schuchmann was stationed at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, Hawaii, where he was assigned as Project Officer for the USS Hopper (DDG 70) DSRA upon arrival. He also served as Project Superintendent for the USS Bremerton (SSN 698) DSRA, and as the Repair Officer for surface ships at Hawaii Regional Maintenance Center. Prior to reporting to his current assignment as the Officer in Charge of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) Detachment Everett, he served as Deputy Operations Officer at PSNS & IMF, from 2015 to 2017.
Commander Schuchmann is authorized to wear various personal awards including the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He has served on teams that have been awarded the Navy Unit Commendation and Meritorious Unit Commendation.
