Command Master Chief, Naval Sea Systems Command

Master Chief Petty Officer Robert R. Crossno, a native of Memphis, Tennessee, enlisted in the Navy In December 1990. Following completion of basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois, he reported to Basic Enlisted Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut, following recruit training for Basic Submarine School, Basic Sonar electronics, and Sonar Technician (Submarine) “A” school.   

Crossno’s initial sea assignment was aboard USS Portsmouth (SSN 707) as a member of the ship’s Sonar Division. During this tour of duty the ship completed a Depot Modernization Period and deployed to the Western Pacific Ocean. Crossno then reported as a plank owner to USS Columbia (SSN 771) where he served as a sonar supervisor and First Lieutenant. In July 1997, Crossno reported to Naval Submarine School in Groton, Connecticut, as lead instructor of the Basic Sonar Electronics course and the AN/BSY-1/2 system pipelines. He also qualified as a Master Training Specialist. 

Following Naval Submarine School, Crossno reported for sea duty aboard USS Miami (SSN 755) as Deck Division Leading Chief Petty Officer, Salvage Team Leader and Escape Equipment Leading Petty Officer. While serving aboard Miami he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer and made a second deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. 

Crossno then reported to USS Albuquerque (SSN 706) as the Combat Systems Department Chief. He completed two surge deployments and a Mediterranean Sea deployment while serving aboard Albuquerque. Crossno transferred to Commander, Submarine Squadron Four in Groton, Connecticut, as the Combat Systems Tactical advisor and evaluator. During this tour, he earned the Chief of the Boat qualifications and was advanced to Senior Chief Petty Officer. Crossno graduated the Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport, Rhode Island, class 134 (Gray) and the Command Master Chief / Chief of the Boat Capstone course prior to assuming the duties as the Chief of the Boat aboard USS Hawaii (SSN 766). Hawaii completed an Eastern Pacific Ocean deployment, earning the U. S. Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Citation with “O” for drug operations in the Pacific Theater and later conducting an inter-fleet transfer of the ship Hawaii to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in 2009. 

As a Master Chief Petty Officer, Crossno reported to Commander Submarine Forces Pacific as the Staff Command Master Chief August 2010. He assumed the responsibilities of Command Master Chief of USS Port Royal in January 2013. After a successful tour aboard USS Port Royal, Crossno reported to Commander, Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific. In December 2017, Crossno assumed the duties of Command Master Chief at Naval Sea Systems Command.

Crossno’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (2 awards), Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal (6 awards) and other personal and unit awards.
