CDR Sean Flanagan, USN

Executive Officer, Naval Nuclear Power Training Command

Commander Sean Flanagan enlisted in the Navy from Douglas, GA in 1997. He was assigned as a Nuclear Electrician’s Mate and completed the Nuclear Field “A” School and Nuclear Power School in Orlando, FL. Following prototype training, he was assigned as a Staff Instructor on MTS-635 in Charleston, SC, where he was selected for the Nuclear Enlisted Commissioning Program. LCDR Flanagan earned his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University and earned his commission in 2003.

After completion of the Officer Nuclear Propulsion Pipeline training at in 2004, he was assigned to the USS KENTUCKY (SSBN 737) (BLUE) as the Reactor Controls Assistant and Quality Assurance Officer, where he completed five strategic deterrent patrols. Following his first sea tour, CDR Flanagan was assigned as an Assistant Professor of Naval Science at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, NE in 2007. While on shore duty he completed his Masters in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University.

In 2009 he completed Submarine Officers Advanced Course and was assigned as the Engineer Officer onboard USS TUCSON (SSN 770) until 2013 where he completed one Western Pacific Deployment. CDR Flanagan then served as a Deputy Program Manager for the Director of Submarine Warfare (N97) Special Project Division in Washington, DC until 2015.

CDR Flanagan completed the Submarine Command Course in November of 2016 and was assigned as Executive Officer onboard USS JOHN WARNER (SSN 785), the most recently commissioned submarine at the time. There he conducted all the post-delivery shakedown operations and prepared the crew and ship’s systems for its maiden deployment.
