Sea 21 Combatant Modernization Program

Program Summary

Over the next several years, 22 Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruisers and 62 Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers will undergo a structured modernization to ensure they reach their projected 30 year service life. The ships will be fitted with new software, combat systems, HM&E and machinery upgrades to improve all areas of ship functionality. The first ships to start receiving upgrades are the Ticonderoga-class cruisers: the first two of which, USS Bunker Hill and USS Mobile Bay have successfully completed modernization.

These efforts will improve these ships’ warfighting capability by supporting future combat system integration, improving operational availability, increasing capacity, and improve crew working and living conditions.

Destroyer modernization, beginning in late 2010, will mark the first time a major modernization program has begun while the remaining ships of the class are still being constructed. The first Arleigh Burke destroyers were built almost 20 years ago, and more advanced technologies are being built into the newer ships that will need to be backfitted into the older hulls.
