SEA 21 Auxiliary, Amphibious and Mine Warfare Programs

Program Summary

In addition to surface combatant modernization, amphibious and auxiliary ships such as the Navy's in-service amphibious assault ships, command ships, transport and cargo ships, and small craft, need mid-life improvements as well. In 2010, NAVSEA 21 is currently planning or managing lifecycle availabilities on almost 60 amphibious and auxiliary ships. That includes a mid-life sustainment program on our LSD 41, LSD 49, LCC 19 and LHD 1 classes, as well as upgrade programs for MCM-class mine hunters and PC-class coastal patrol ships. Analogous to the cruiser and destroyer modernization programs, these ships require upgrades and life cycle extensions to obtain maximum utility and bridge the gap between one generation of vessel and the next. In almost every instance, it is significantly more cost-effective to upgrade a current vessel than it is to construct a new one. These modernization efforts allow the Navy to extend service life on these valuable assets, saving the taxpayers money.
