Material Donation

The Naval Sea Systems Command, Navy Inactive Ships Office (SEA 21I) is the Secretary of the Navy’s agent for donation of non-historic captured, condemned or obsolete (hereafter referred to as “obsolete”) combat, ordnance, and shipboard material to eligible non-profit organizations, at no cost to the Government, for educational display purposes under Title 10 U.S.C. 2572 or Title 10 U.S.C. 7545. Private individuals are not entitled to donations under these statutes.

The Curator Branch of the Naval History & Heritage Command has responsibility for the loan or donation of obsolete combat, ordnance, or shipboard material of historical significance.

These programs serve the interest of both the Navy and the public, representing a tangible reminder of the Navy’s role in American History, commemorating the sailors who served, as well as showcasing naval tradition and heritage.

While the Navy has some obsolete material that can be donated, the material is not centrally located and is not readily inventoried. SEA 21I has limited resources to pursue searches for obsolete material; however, we will continue to facilitate the donation of obsolete combat, ordnance, and shipboard material where it is known to exist.

The first step is to qualify your organization by submitting the appropriate forms and submitting them as directed. Every effort will be made to process the material based on available personnel resources. Upon completion of all application requirements and qualifications as an eligible organization, the requested military equipment will be considered for donation to the requesting organization.

If your organization does NOT meet the requirements of Title 10 U.S.C. Section 2572 and 7545 and you would like to learn about other means of obtaining materials, contact the Logistics Agency (DLA) Disposition Services regarding the sale of surplus property.
