Entry Level Engineering Opportunities

Looking for a Challenging Career?
Are you interested in a career that provides you with the opportunity to earn good money and affords you new challenges? If so, then consider applying for an engineering career internship with the U.S. Department of the Navy. Internships run for a two-year period. Upon successful completion of the internship, the program provides an opportunity for conversion to a permanent federal position.

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is currently accepting applications for the following engineering disciplines:

Civil
Electronics
Industrial
Mechanical
Nuclear
Chemical
Electrical
General
Materials
Naval Architecture
Welding
Computer

Starting Salaries include GS-5 - $43,560, GS-7, $53,957, and GS-9, $57,329. Starting salaries are based upon qualifications.

Advancement/Career Progression is toward the target grade of the specific position being filled (GS-11 or GS-12).

Salaries are approximate and are based upon January 2009 data.

Qualifications

To apply for a position you must have the following qualifications:

GS-5 level positions

Bachelor's degree in Engineering (required for all levels)

If hired at the GS-5 grade level you are eligible for an accelerated promotion to the next level after six months providing training requirements are met and performance is at an acceptable level.

GS-7 level positions

One year of graduate-level education or Superior Academic Achievement (GPA 3.0 or higher, class Standing or Honor Society membership) or one year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level.

If hired at the GS-7 level you are eligible for an accelerated promotion to the next level after six months providing training requirements are met and performance is at an acceptable level.

GS-9 level position

Two years of progressively higher-level master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree or one year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level.

Individual Development

Each new intern has an Individual Development Plan (IDP) that covers organizational structure, admin, safety, security issues, organizational products and work methods, technical skill development, job resources and tools, submarine systems and culminates in actual job rotation assignments.
