Captain James Jones, born in Frankfurt, A.M. West Germany and raised in Marina, California, joined the Navy in July 1978. After completing basic training as the Recruit Chief Petty Officer in Great Lakes, Illinois, he attended Electrician Mate “A” School at Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, graduating as an EM3. Following “A” School, he attended the Naval Nuclear Power School at Orlando, Florida. He attended prototype training at the Nuclear Power Training Unit, Windsor Locks, Connecticut.
In June 1980, Captain Jones transferred to PCU Carl Vinson (CVN 70) located in Newport News, Virginia. His tour included new construction, post shakedown availability, a world cruise, homeport shift to Alameda, California, two West Pacific/Indian Ocean deployments, two Rim of the Pacific operations, North Pacific operations, and advancements to second class petty officer, first class petty officer, chief petty officer, and commissioning as an Ensign in the Navy’s Limited Duty Officer Program in December 1987.
In March 1988, following Officer Indoctrination School in Pensacola, Florida, he was transferred to USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) where he served as Reactor Mechanical Tech Assistant and Reactor Mechanical Assistant. His other assignments include Commander Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, USS George Washington (CVN 73), USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and Readiness Support Group, Norfolk.
In July 2011 he transferred to Commander Submarine Forces Atlantic, Norfolk, Virginia, where he served as Maintenance Readiness and Improvements Officer. Captain Jones reported as Deputy Commander, Norfolk Naval Shipyard in April 2012.
Captain Jones has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards), the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), and various unit, campaign and service awards.
