SEASONAL EMPLOYMENT versus
FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT

Benefits for permanent seasonal employment are all the same as for permanent full time employment. Eligibility for life insurance, health insurance, retirement, annual leave, and sick leave are all identical.

The difference is found in management’s ability to place seasonal employees into a non-pay status due to workload considerations for indeterminate periods of time. When placed in non-pay, a seasonal employee continues to be eligible to carry health insurance but is still responsible for their share of the premiums. They may either allow a bill to run up or arrange to make monthly payments while in non-pay. Federal Employees Group Life Insurance coverage continues with no cost to the employee. Should the non-pay status continue beyond 365 days, both health and life insurance are terminated until the employee is called back to work. Up to 6 months of non-pay in a calendar year counts toward retirement (time is included in the employees Service Computation Date (SCD). Any non-pay beyond a total of 6 months in a calendar year does not count and causes the employees SCD to be recomputed. Non-pay time in differing amounts will delay Within Grade Increases to the various pay steps. Any annual or sick leave the employee has accrued is frozen while on non-pay but is available upon return to a pay status.

WHAT IS REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBILITY?
