Whether it's one-on-one tutoring, summer jobs for disabled students, or the
chance for bright middle school students to build a missile from
swim noodles and water bottles, NSWC PHD participates in a
variety of educational and tutoring programs with local schools.
By offering a preview of the challenges and rewards that employment with the
command can offer, these programs give students at all levels, from elementary
school through college, the opportunity and incentive to pursue their studies
and to learn about our work.
They also support NSWC PHD’s "grow our own"
philosophy: we hope that once Ventura County youth become aware
of the many career opportunities at the command, some of them
will one day become employees.

Pre-engineering Program Offers Students Hands-on Experience
This program has grown significantly since its inception in 1998. Students from
all local high schools work side-by-side with command engineers in a realistic
work environment as part of our Pre-Engineering Program. The semester-long
sessions, developed in conjunction with the Oxnard Union High School District,
give students hands-on experience in applying math and physical science
knowledge to actual command projects. Upon completion of the course, students
may apply for paid positions as engineering aides.
Innovation is Key in National Engineer’s Week Competition
Competition Each February, more than 100 students from local middle schools
participate in our National Engineer’s Week Competition. With the help of our
engineers, students use their engineering, science and math skills – and a
healthy dose of creativity – to build missiles from swim noodle pieces, water
bottles, corn-dog sticks and rubber bands.
Students compete for prizes donated by the local chapters of the American
Society of Naval Engineers and the Society of Logistics Engineers. Winning
missiles must fly accurately from the experimental Launcher.
By engaging students in the process of solving engineering problems, the
event highlights the variety of career choices within the command, and gives
them an opportunity to have a great time.
The winning team, Las Colinas Middle School, celebrates mission success in the
National Engineer's Week Competition.
