The Crane Division offers its civilian employees a flexible work schedule, competitive salaries and generous benefits in an informal workplace. Our commitment to lifelong learning is reflected in the large number of graduate-level engineering and science courses taught on the base, as well as other opportunities to pursue advanced education.

Benefits

NSWC Crane offers excellent benefits and travel opportunities. Some of these benefits include:

  • Job stability - NSWC Crane hosts many important Navy programs, and while no military site is completely immune to government cutbacks, NSWC Crane is positioned very well for the future.
  • Flexibility in work schedule - NSWC Crane offers its employees flexi-time which allows flexible work schedules, accumulation of credit hours (for example, one week you could work an extra hour Monday to Thursday, and then leave four hours early on Friday) and other benefits to allow for the employees' varying work schedule needs.
  • Travel opportunities - Some travel will usually be required in your job, and often you will have a big say on how frequently you will go on travel. This is a great opportunity to see other parts of the country (and sometimes the world) while working with top professionals in other locations.
  • Potential promotion opportunities - NSWC Crane employees are usually promoted in a timely manner since they are recognized and appropriately rewarded for good performance with promotions, bonuses and permanent pay increases. The new personnel demonstration project will serve to enhance your ability to be compensated appropriately.
  • Insurance - NSWC Crane Participates in group life and health insurance programs. This will greatly reduce your out-of-pocket expenses. Such a large group of people involved in these programs keeps the costs reasonable. You can choose from a large number of health insurance plans, HMOs and PPOs to find the insurance that meets your needs.
  • Leave - In addition to 10 paid federal holidays, new employees earn 13 vacation days a year, increasing to 20 days after 3 years and to 26 days a year after 15 years. Also, employees earn an additional 13 sick days per year.
  • Retirement - New NSWC Crane employees are enrolled in the FERS program (Federal Employees Retirement System). This includes the
  • Thrift Savings Plan which allows employees to contribute a portion of their income into their retirement fund (pre-tax), and the government will match the first 5%!
  • Mentor Program - NSWC Crane has developed a robust Mentoring Program which provides the opportunity for the promotion of a culture of personal growth and professional development. The program supports participants through the use of various resources and tools, e.g., Mentoring Circles, brown-bag lunches, blogs, training development opportunities and an extensive resource wiki.
  • Transportation Incentive Program (TIP) - The Department of the Navy (DON) has implemented a TIP for DON employees to help reduce their daily contribution to traffic congestion and air pollution. DON members are eligible for transit benefits up to $230.00 per month for specific pre-approved commuter mass transit transportation costs not to exceed actual expenses.
  • Credit Union - Your banking has never been easier, with the NSWC Federal Credit Union conveniently located both on base and at several local locations. Direct deposit of NSWC Crane paychecks, VISA cards, home and car loans, online banking with bill payment and more!

Salary

Crane's pay system is called the personnel demonstration project (a.k.a. "DEMO"). DEMO includes several initiatives designed to enhance our ability to attract, develop and incentivize high-performance employees.

Starting salaries (based on education only) for scientists and engineers under the NSWC Crane demonstration project, as of January 12, 2014 are as follows:
