CONTINUED SERVICE TO THE NATION

Background:

Over 30,000 injured Soldiers, Sailors and Marines have resulted from the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. These conflicts continue to generate wounded warriors at a rate of 300 a month. Despite a general willingness to hire Wounded Warriors, they have an unemployment rate that is double the national average.

The Department of the Navy (DoN) is dedicated to hiring Wounded Warriors to fill many of our hiring needs. To date, the DoN has had some success in hiring Wounded Warriors. Typically Commands with a strong top-down commitment to Wounded Warrior hiring have had better success. But barriers to hiring these young men and women remain. A full understanding of our senior leaders’ intentions and an understanding of possible solutions to breaking down hiring barriers can increase DoN hiring of Wounded Warriors.

Purpose of Conference:

The Conference is intended to coordinate and focus the Navy’s Wounded Warrior career employment efforts. The conference will disseminate guidance from senior-most Navy officials, identify solutions to hiring barriers and help DoN commands reach out to Wounded Warriors.
