PORT HUENEME, Calif. - Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Schroeder, Naval Surface Warfare Center Port Hueneme Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Test and Evaluation Project Officer, has been named the National Defense Industrial Association's (NDIA) Navy Military Tester of the Year for 2009.
According to the citation, Schroeder earned NDIA recognition when he "displayed exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication to duty and strong technical acumen in leading the efforts of civil servants, contractors and ship's force on five surface combatants through 13 Aegis BMD Test and Evaluation missions."
"Lt. Cmdr. Schroeder has consistently demonstrated outstanding performance," said NSWC Port Hueneme Commander Capt. John Ailes. "His leadership and technical rigor have resulted in 100 percent accomplishment of the test objectives assigned for each mission. He continues to distinguish himself as an Officer with unlimited potential through his tireless efforts and outstanding leadership in advancing the Aegis BMD."
Schroeder's major project accomplishments include the first fleet firing of an SM-3; the first Aegis-to-Aegis cued engagement; the first BMD engagement in the Gulf of Alaska; the first successful demonstration of the Mk-99 Kill Assessment System against a live target; and multiple joint and allied BMD events. Additionally, Schroeder's efforts were critical in the development, testing and deployment of a new generation of ballistic missile defense capabilities.
NDIA will present Schroeder with his award at a formal ceremony during their Test and Evaluation conference to be held in San Diego the week of March 1.
Testing weapon system and missile capabilities allows NSWC Port Hueneme, a field activity of NAVSEA, to verify future technologies that maximize warfighter capabilities and increase readiness, which supports the nation's maritime strategy.
