From NAVSEA Office of Corporate Communications
WASHINGTON ― Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Newport Division leadership has earned the 2009 Department of the Navy (DoN) Nathaniel Stinson Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Program Achievement Award.
Capt. Michael Byman, NUWC Newport commander, and Dr. Paul Lefebvre, NUWC Newport technical director, were named recipients of the annual award, which honors outstanding executive leaders, commands and activities that have distinguished themselves and made notable contributions to promote equality and diversity in the federal workplace. This year's award marks the third consecutive year NUWC Newport leadership has earned the prestigious award.
"We are extremely pleased our leadership has been recognized for this award. Captain Byman and Dr. Lefebvre are actively involved in programs that ensure all employees are treated with respect, are able to work in a place free from harassment, and are provided with opportunities for mentoring and growth," said NUWC Technical Director Donald McCormack, Jr. "They have provided exemplary leadership accomplishments, and earnest support of EEO programs."
The warfare center's most noted EEO achievements for 2009 were in the area of educational partnerships.
NUWC Newport built a long-term partnership with North Carolina Agriculture and Technical (NCA&T) State University that included an increased presence at annual career fairs and College of Engineering colloquia, as well as participation of NCA&T faculty and graduate/undergraduate co-op students in summer internships. Additionally, NUWC Newport signed a collaborative agreement with the University of Puerto Rico-Mayague.
Byman and Lefebvre will receive their recognition during an awards presentation ceremony at the DoN Human Resources/Equal Employment Opportunity conference Oct. 30 in Arlington, Va.
NUWC Division Newport, a field activity of the Naval Sea Systems Command, continues to emphasize the diversity by including personnel with different life experiences, and in expanding recruiting and outreach programs to minority serving intuitions and organizations.
