OCT15-01: NAVSEA Highlights Energy Initiatives at Naval Energy Forum
From Naval Sea Systems Command Office of Corporate Communications
McLEAN, Va. ― Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Commander Vice Adm. Kevin McCoy highlighted optimization and fielding energy saving initiatives at the first Naval Energy Forum Oct. 14 in McLean, Va.
Forum participants discussed the Department of the Navy's energy strategy that aims to decrease the Navy's dependence on foreign fuel sources.
McCoy participated in a panel discussion entitled "Concepts to Reality: Bridging the Gap" that highlighted actions the Navy is taking to transition concepts into an enhanced combat capability.
"Very often we forget about optimization, and instead we're thinking about the next big thing. For the fleet we have today, we own it. Of the 313-ship Navy, about 70 percent of it we own today," said McCoy.
McCoy then discussed what the Navy is doing to optimize how that fleet runs.
"We start with I-ENCON (Incentivized Energy Conservation initiative). With education, awareness, training and the incentive back to the ship's Operating Target account, our Sailors have done an incredible job over the last 15 to 20 years in real savings. The Navy has realized a fuel cost avoidance of approximately $135 million this year," said McCoy.
McCoy also highlighted NAVSEA initiatives in energy efficient hull coatings, high efficiency lighting, and stern flaps. NAVSEA develops, delivers and maintains ships and systems on time, on cost for the United States Navy.
In addition to the participating in the panel discussion, NAVSEA representatives from field activities and program offices showcased various fuel-saving initiatives, practices and programs in the Maritime Breakout room.
