OCT08-01: Norfolk Ship Support Activity Established
From Norfolk Naval Shipyard Public Affairs

PORTSMOUTH, Va. ? Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) formally recognized the establishment the Norfolk Ship Support Activity (NSSA) in a ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk Oct. 5.

The ceremonial event recognized the recent re-naming and -organization of former Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) to the NSSA. The organization, now an Echelon 4 activity reporting to NNSY, will support the region's surface ship maintenance and provide Fleet technical support.

As a result of the consolidation, NNSY, a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), has gained approximately 1,280 Sailors and about 850 civilians from the former MARMC.

"Today we are officially recognizing the dis-establishment of MARMC, the efforts to consolidate several functions and departments of MARMC with NNSY counterparts, and the creation of NSSA," said Capt. Scott Mattingly, NSSA commanding officer.

Event attendees included NAVSEA Commander, Vice Adm. Kevin M. McCoy; Rear Adm. J. Clarke Orzalli, Director, Fleet Maintenance Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command; Rear Adm. Thomas J. Eccles, Chief Engineer and Deputy Commander for Naval Systems Engineering, Rear Adm. Jim McManamon, NAVSEA Deputy Commander for Surface Warfare; and John James, NAVSEA Executive Director for Logistics, Maintenance and Industrial Operations.

During the event Mattingly reflected on NSSA's history of Fleet support.  ". . .We do not intend to change the level of support we provide to our Fleet customers," said Mattingly.   "In fact, we intend to not only maintain MARMC's legacy performance level of timely support, we intend to foster every opportunity to improve that level of performance."

Orzalli discussed the new command's ability to enhance service to the Fleet, and encouraged NSSA employees to work toward improving the shipyard's service functions.

"This was done to align ourselves to best support the Fleet using our most effective and efficient organization," said Orzalli.  "We want to be responsive, and get the best value out of the tax dollar.  While there's a lot of work ahead, we have the right people leading the charge!"

NNSY is one of four NAVSEA public shipyards that play a major role in maintaining America's fleet and providing a wartime surge capability to keep the nation's ships ready for combat.
