From PSNS Public Affairs Office
BANGOR, Wash.- Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF), Bangor site, a field activity of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) returned the USS Maine (SSBN 741) to the Fleet one day early, following her Extended Refit Period at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor.
The 48,000 man-day refit contained a large modernization package and included extensive upgrades to the Ohio-class ballistic submarine.
"We docked her on time, completed work on time, successfully completed sea trials with one day less sea time, and provided the Fleet another strategic asset one day earlier than originally planned," said Capt. Donald Neubert, IMF commanding officer. "The refit was completed one day early from the original timeline, and is a testament to the PSNS & IMF and USS Maine's teamwork approach in accomplishing the work and communicating effectively in executing the schedule."
Completing modernizations on time maintains today's Fleet and is essential to maintaining warfighting readiness. NAVSEA and its field activities continuously review and improve maintenance and modernization processes towards sustaining today's Fleet efficiently and effectively.
