IMAGE: On Oct. 14, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division hosted its very first Dahlgren Downtown event at The Old Silk Mill in Downtown Fredericksburg. In addition to the science, technology, engineering and math displays, community members were able to view a number of Dahlgren historical artifacts.

Kelly Morgan is a computer scientist at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) and an active volunteer with the NSWCDD Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Outreach program. Morgan established and now leads a coding club with fourth-sixth graders at Dahlgren School.

IMAGE: Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division scientist Luis Valcourt-Colón is the program lead for the SeaPerch underwater robotics STEM program at Dahlgren. Valcourt-Colón is a recipient of the Distinguished Community Service Award for his volunteer service with the SeaPerch and SeaGlide programs and with the STEM community at NSWCDD. His citation reads in part, “With innovative ideas, he grew a small outreach program into one of the most effective Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics programs at NSWCDD. His drive and enthusiasm continue to be critical in reaching students and developing the next generation of STEM leaders.”

Casey Plew, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) commanding officer, speaks with Kyle Allwine, director of government affairs for the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, at the annual science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) Summit open to the public at Chancellor High School. “Participating in STEM education is a valuable investment in both your future as well as society’s future,” Plew told students in his keynote speech. “Soak up the awesomeness of all of the different STEM efforts displayed for you. And get excited. One day, someone could be telling a future group of students about something amazing you developed – and it all started with you getting engaged in STEM at school.”
