Artificial Intelligence Systems Integration Support Innovative Technology at NSWCDD
May 5, 2021
IMAGE: Dr. Jeffrey Solka is the Senior Scientific and Technical Manager for Naval Data Sciences at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD). He also serves as the Naval Sea Systems Command Knowledge Point Champion for artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) systems, quantum sciences and digital sciences. Solka oversees AI/ML integration for various projects and leads AI/ML science and technology efforts. As part of a Naval Innovative Science Engineering initiative, Solka, Igor Shtau, lead artificial intelligence and machine learning engineer and Dr. Chris Weiland, acting chief scientist, discuss the integration of a Nvidia Jetson and optical targeting payload onto a manufactured quadcopter at NSWCDD. “The project is examining the effects of machine learning techniques on the kill chain and how these algorithms can be effectively verified and validated,” said Solka.

NSWC Dahlgren Division Super Hero profile – Dr. Elizabet Haro

IMAGE: DAHLGREN, Va. (March 28, 2019) – Dr. Elizabet Haro – a Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) engineer who specializes in Human Systems Integration (HSI) – credits her parents’ inspiration and dedication for motivating her to be the first in her family to graduate from college. Haro’s motivation eventually led to a doctoral degree and her current position leading a science and technology team focused on developing a strategic direction of applied research and advanced technology development to grow the Navy’s expertise in Human Performance, Human-Device Interaction and HSI.

“I came to this country when I was eight years old. Only my immediate family accompanied me on the journey and I remember vividly leaving my friends behind because freedom no longer existed,” recounted Haro. “My journey to freedom was through the sea. My parents came to this country without knowing anyone or speaking the language. But they knew that through hard work, education and dedication, the opportunities were endless for my sisters and me. After finishing my bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Purdue University, I knew I wasn’t done. It took me years, but I finally went back to school and finished my PhD at Virginia Tech. I joined NSWC Dahlgren Division because I want to help protect the freedom and waters that gave me the opportunities and embraced my family, when I was a child.”

Navy Innovators Reveal Revolutionary Research to Counter Emerging Threats
October 12, 2018
IMAGE: KING GEORGE, Va. (Sept. 25, 2018) – Associate investigators Teeya Roche and Megan Kozub are pictured at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) In-house Laboratory Independent Research (ILIR) and Independent Applied Research (IAR) End of Year Review. They identified challenges, objectives, accomplishments and future benefits related to their IAR project -- “Data Visualization Support for Creation of a Numerical Table: Effects on Training and Performance” -- to Navy technical managers, engineers, and scientists as well as representatives from academia, industry, transition partners, and other key stakeholders. The innovative tool can reduce Sailor workload by minimizing the required sectors that a warfighter must monitor for each ship based on the global coverage area of the Fleet doctrine.
