Nearly 200 Small Businesses Participate in NSWC Crane's 21st Annual Buy Indiana

FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- The Linton Chamber of Commerce hosted Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division’s (NSWC Crane) 21st annual Buy Indiana Expo Tuesday at French Lick Resort and Casino on Tuesday. The event offered companies opportunities to expand their business with government centers, as well as networking with other companies from around the state and country.

Nearly 200 companies from 14 states participated in this year’s expo, where NSWC Crane representatives held breakout sessions/workshops to educate vendors on conducting business with the federal government and connected interested parties with key NSWC Crane contacts.

“Buy Indiana is great for Crane,” said Matt Burkett, NSWC Crane’s Deputy for Small Business. “I love it because it allows me to understand what’s available – what technologies, what capabilities are available in the marketplace, especially locally. That way, when we’re crafting our buying strategy, we’ve got a list of companies in our back pocket to reach out to.”

The “Buy Indiana” initiative began in 1997 with a goal of increasing NSWC Crane’s spending in the state.

NSWC Crane procured $1.2 billion in products and services last fiscal year, with approximately $52 million going to Hoosier businesses and $48 million paid to Indiana small businesses. For companies headquartered outside the state but performing work in Indiana, Crane obligated just over $248 million, of which $83.5 million was performed by small businesses.

The Buy Indiana Expo not only teaches companies about expanding their businesses into government contracting, but also allows NSWC Crane to find new and innovative products and services to support the United States military.

“It’s important that Buy Indiana attendees continue to develop business contacts with other companies in attendance, and continue to expand what their company’s capabilities are,” Burkett said. “We can help support some of those newer businesses in obtaining subcontract opportunities so that they can continue to grow and eventually provide us with capabilities that we need but they don’t have yet.”
