McGrath named NCMA Manager of the Year

By PSNS & IMF Public Affairs

Dec. 6, the Naval Civilian Manager's Association proudly announced Jenna McGrath, project superintendent for USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735) Extended Refit Period, as the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility’s 2022 NCMA Manager of the Year.

The other distinguished nominees were Karen Coffman, Jim Cook, Gloria Edmonds and Peter Laketa. Each nominee was recognized by their peers in leadership and mentoring of others, professionalism, involvement in organizations inside and outside the command, overall leadership and management skills, and their ability to make a difference.

As the project superintendent for the USS Pennsylvania ERP — the first Chief of Naval Operations SSBN ERP at PSNS & IMF — McGrath is laying the groundwork for future ERPs to come. She is building relationships with outside organizations such as the Trident Refit Facility; Commander Submarine Group 9; Commander Submarine Force Pacific, and personally investing in the development of her team.

Her skills at seeking out opportunities for her personnel to grow and come together as a unit is unmatched. It has been seen in her team's ability to quickly adapt to the changes thrown their way. The culture she built has resulted in specific requests to join the Pennsylvania project team, from both production and engineering personnel, and is a testament to her influence.

McGrath is also strongly committed to developing the community within the shipyard as a whole. She champions diversity and inclusion through her participation with Employee Resource Groups, STEM outreach, the National Association of Superintendents, NCMA and others. She is a sought after mentor within the command, especially for women who are entering leadership roles. Her mentoring is accomplished through one-on-one sessions as well as her continued support as a Command University Leadership Curriculum course leader for the second-level courses. The enthusiasm she brings to the work and her compassion for others has helped people achieve their fullest potential — to the benefit of themselves and those around them.

Since receiving the NCMA award, McGrath has been selected as the submarine program manager for Code 300, Operations.

NCMA is a private, non-profit national organization, established to promote the improvement of management in the Department of Navy, to improve communication among its members, and to foster a positive standing within our local communities.
