Navy Showcases Local Contracting Opportunities at Industry Day, Expects $1 billion in Next Five Years

By Naval Surface Warfare Center Corona Public Affairs

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division held its annual Industry Day at Corona City Hall Tuesday, June 19, highlighting how industry can help the warfare center meet $50 million of growth in contracting requirements.  Demand for the warfare center’s mission continues to increase and the additional growth comes on top of the $1 billion in contracting expected in the next five years.

“Our Industry Day helps show the region how we do business, what our needs are, and ultimately increases competition and reduces acquisition lead time,” said Dan Deconzo, NSWC Corona’s deputy for small business.  “It also informs the community about our technical capabilities and improves communication with local businesses that can help us execute our mission to support the warfighter and the Navy.”

Deconzo added the event helps foster discussions to help meet future contracting requirements and said about 250 small business executives and owners attended to learn ways to access federal government contracts and how to bid for millions of dollars of work that ranges from smaller projects to mega contracts, including those at Norco’s Navy base.

The forum – sponsored by the Riverside Community College District Procurement Assistance Center – will include insight on how to network and deal with rules set by the Small Business Administration, federal and state governments, and the Navy.  Capt. Rick Braunbeck, NSWC Corona’s commanding officer, briefed attendees with a command overview, and Technical Director Dianne Costlow, SES, presented the command’s strategic alignment with recently updated national defense strategy.

According to federal acquisition regulations, all acquisitions up to $150,000 are set aside for small businesses, unless the rules provide an exception, says Deconzo.  He encouraged business leaders to be proactive and provide business information while keeping a dialogue open with his office for possible acquisition opportunities.

“We recommend that you provide us with a capabilities statement in advance,” he said.  “To be successful in the process, it’s important that you respond with specifics of how you are going to do a particular job.”

NSWC Corona is one of the largest employers in Riverside County. From its headquarters in Norco, NSWC Corona employs more than 3,100 worldwide and contributes more than $330 million annually to the regional economy.
