Capt. Michael R. Coughlin

Commanding Officer, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport

Capt. Mike Coughlin was born in Berwyn and raised in Woodridge, both cities outside of Chicago, Illinois.  He graduated from Northwestern University in 1990 with a degree in Chemical Engineering and was commissioned through the NROTC program.  He completed a master's degree in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University in 2011.

 

Initial sea tours included assignments as Division Officer, USS Asheville (SSN 758); Engineer, USS Portsmouth (SSN 707); Executive Officer, USS Columbia (SSN 771).  He commanded USS Olympia (SSN 717) from 2008 until 2011.

 

Tours ashore include assignments as flag lieutenant to COMSUBGRU Seven, COMSUBPAC RADCON officer, OSD PA&E Naval Forces Analyst, and deputy commander for COMSUBRON Three.

 

He began his acquisition career in 2012 while assigned to PMS 450, VIRGINIA Class program office. Captain Coughlin most recently served as the program manager of PMS 415, Undersea Defensive Warfare Systems.

 

Captain Coughlin's personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit awards.
